About Alex
Alex joined the McLoughlin Lab in September 2024 to work on the Fences in the Sand project on Sable Island, a collaborative study between the Sable Island Institute and Parks Canada. Her current research focuses on understanding the relationship between feral horses and vegetation on Sable Island to inform conservation objectives.
In 2021, Alex completed her B.Sc. in Environmental Science at Mount Royal University in Calgary, where her passion for birding led her to work as a wildlife biologist on large-scale oil and gas projects. Over the past four years, she has led various surveys and habitat assessments for birds, amphibians, and species-at-risk, helping project coordinators understand potential impacts and develop mitigation measures.
Driven by a desire for continuous improvement, Alex views graduate school as the next step in enhancing her skills as a biologist, learning to bridge the gap between research and its practical applications. Her 3 loves are plants, horses, and birds so in her free time, she is tending to her many houseplants, horseback riding, and birding!
